 YPO ORPHAN OLYMPICS

San Salvador, El Salvador

July 16-20, 2007

"The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph, but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered, but to have fought well."

-The Olympic Creed

This summer, Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO), an organization for young, successful business owners, and Orphan Helpers teamed up for the first time to host the 2007 Orphan Olympic Games in El Salvador. Six families worked long but rewarding days in two government orphanages: CIPI, home to about 80 girls, and CISNA, a center for 140 boys.

The kids were divided into teams and competed in soccer, volleyball, basketball, track, and swimming competitions. Team members worked as referees, score keepers, coaches, cheerleaders and players in the games.

The games were complete with Opening and Closing Ceremonies, which included a parade led by a marching band of boys and a karate exhibition. After the final games on the last day, the team recognized the champions of each sport and awarded medals to all the participants.

These games gave the children the opportunity to simply be kids, a rare chance in many of their tough young lives. By being active, indispensable members of a team, the kids found a place to belong and were able to take pride in something bigger than themselves.
